a good read March 14, 2010 Mrs. D. J. Newbould (england) this book was a great read, the letter form was an interesting format and the characters were believeable and loveable.
Brilliant! March 11, 2010 Louise Wille (Denmark) Absolutely loved this book. It takes a very serious topic and a would-be grim setting of post war Britain and deals with it seriously, but at the same time lightheartedly, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The descriptions of characters and their actions leave you laughing, crying, outraged - all the emotions that are evidence of a book touching your heart. Now all I need is a plane ticket, so I can go and see that Island that I already adore for myself.
Loved it! March 10, 2010 Reader 11 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I wasn't sure whether I was going to like the format - the story being told in letter form - but I quickly got into it. In the end, the characters became so real to me that I felt as if I was reading their actual letters! I was completely transported to another place and time.
I loved the way that information was revealed gradually, so that the reader learned about the characters slowly, as in real life. And what a page turner - I couldn't put it down.
Another thing I loved was the subtle writing, which left plenty of room for the reader's imagination.
Just wonderful.
A truly wonderful read March 8, 2010 M. A. O'neill 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Don't let the title or the fact that there are two authors listed put you off reading this gem of a book. I found that my nightly read transported me to a time of unsettled peace in England. What I learned about the immediate challenges in London and, indeed, Guernsey through this scattered collection of letters to friends and family was hypnotically welcoming. Each character is revealed in the abbreviated collection of letters. Each have a richness and diversity that makes for a patchwork of personal histories woven together to create a story well worth exploring.
Delightful. March 6, 2010 Busy mum 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I thought the book was lovely and delightful. True, it is a little fairy story (albeit with a social conscience), but sometimes that is very welcome. I also thought the end was a bit of a let down - mainly due to the change in approach (no longer in "letter" form, but in "diary" form) - but overall the book was still a breath of fresh air. Easy reading without being facile.
