2 out of 5 stars An OK read, but only just...   July 26, 2010
A Norfolk Broad (UK)
I was given this book and saved it to read on holiday. That's really all it's good for. The premise of a book written predominantly in the form of correspondence is not original, but what is? The most tedious thing is that the characters all seem to speak (or write) with the same voice/vocabulary. The story line was horribly predictable and not ultimately satisfying - and in places very much stretched credibility too far. Disappointing. Had I not been lazing on a beach, where my choices of reading matter are less discriminatory, I doubt I would have bothered to finish the book.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous read   July 26, 2010
Second Hand Rose (England)
This is one of the best books I have read in a long time and I loved the way it was written in letter-form - I enjoyed 84 Charing Cross Road for that reason. I was so sad to finish it because I felt that the characters had become friends and I wanted the story to go on and on. Has made me want to read more about the occupation of Guernsey, as I knew nothing of it beforehand.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most wonderful books I have ever read.   July 23, 2010

One of the most wonderful books I have ever read. Based on factual events this is both a love story and a heart warming tale of a community pulling together during an impossible time. After almost a year of not being particularly excited by anything I'd read this book has restored my faith in modern literature. I feel that it is great loss to literature this is the first and last book to be written by Marry Ann Shaffer.

5 out of 5 stars A charming, amusing and educational book!   July 22, 2010

I loved this book, it made me laugh a lot, cry a bit, and I want to know much more about the occupation of the Channel Isles.
I felt quite bereft on finishing it, had to start reading it again, and have since bought 3 copies which I have given to others who have also loved it.

I really enjoyed reading this book, I read it on holiday in Guernsey, made the holiday for me imagining the places, loved the bit about the dead piglet, and tricking the germans, there were lots of other parts i enjoyed but that has stuck in my mind, passed this book on to my mother, who also enjoyed enormously wish i could find another book like it for this years holiday, any body any ideas?
